MAKE THAT MOD+ – SALLYLaPOINTE S/S2019

Ultramodernism & chic meets placid relief at S/S NYFW 2019

Day 7 of New York Fashion Week 2018 started off with a powerful punchline collection from Sally LaPointe. The New York based designer presented her ninth pret-a-porter collection and the steady rise in her designs is seen both creatively and commercially.

LaPointe describes her creations as ‘powerful femininity’ and the elan can be observed in all aspects of her outfits. All the outfits have a very structured and clean look. The lines are stiff and the silhouettes of the pieces is sturdy. Despite this, they have a quiet effete characteristic as promoted by the slight fit of the outfit. Most pants have a straight cut boyish silhouette but the slight clinches around the waist and ankles or the delicate knife pleats give it a soft look. The designer says her inspiration is the modern woman in an egalitarian world, but her designs often portray a stygian aura in their avant-garde construction. The outfits have straight and sleek shoulder lines with slinky and loose sleeves that bloat up near the elbow to constrain at the wrists. LaPointe has carefully constructed an easy to wear and comfort costume that combines glamour to it.

The colour scheme for the collection develops into neutral tones of a crayon black of a crayon black, dull frappe beige and off-white with standout pieces in jewel tones of bright magenta and space blue. The fabrics used have a large range and the designer has craft-fully incorporated different hands for the cloth. Avant-garde pairing of light weight knits and resistant vinyl, while pairing hanging polyester fringes on a sequin dress hem highlights the play of fabrics beautifully. The slightly holographic effect of the plastic and sequins brings glamour to the look. Subtle detailing of thin side-shoulder bags, crop knots and PVC heels help in addressing the dynamic combinations, while the make up and hair resonates a wet slinky look. The venue was also appropriately decorated with minimal hanging fabric swirls on the runway with a sea-soul musical score. The vibe was redolent of “Mod-meets-Met” which the designer portrays perfectly through her creations. The show successfully stands out as one of her best presented collections and shows all signs of being a centre-stage success.

On a venture of creating visual identity and graphics, I enjoy finding solutions to problems big or small and learning new design empathies. I love to find brain heckling ideas, poring over explanatory journalism and dissecting musical genres.
